[ARCHIVED] COUNCIL MEMBER TAVERAS PARTNERS TO HOST FREE ARTS AND LITERACY POP-UPS

COUNCIL MEMBER DENI TAVERAS HOSTS FREE ARTS AND LITERACY POP-UPS, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY MEMORIAL LIBRARY SYSTEM AND DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION
Community Events Focus on Increasing Childhood Literacy and Appreciation for the Arts

Prince George's County Council Member Deni L. Taveras (D) - District 2, in collaboration with the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System and the Department of Parks and Recreation, will host a series of free Arts & Literacy Summer Pop-Ups to provide children with an opportunity to build and retain literacy skills through multicultural storytelling and visual arts workshops.

The first Pop-Up event will be held at the Super Clean Laundromat, Saturday, June 29, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon, 1425 University Boulevard, Suite 213, in Hyattsville, Maryland.

The Arts & Literacy Summer Pop-Ups, developed for children grades 1 through 6, will bring together children from diverse backgrounds to share in creative stories, artistic expression and imaginative experiences. The event series aims to continue the history, legacy, and celebration of books and arts while embracing the cultural diversity of Prince George's County.

“Early childhood is a critical time in the development of children’s critical thinking and visual learning,” says Council Member Taveras. “Our Arts & Literacy Summer Pop-Ups encourage and support diverse and inclusive language development that is both educational and creative. District 2 has the largest number of young multilingual residents in Prince George’s County and it is my obligation to provide them with opportunities and resources that inspire their passion for literacy and the arts, while helping them reach their full potential.”

Council Member Taveras and Prince George's County Memorial Library System will provide a free book (while supplies last) to each child who attends the Arts & Literacy Summer Pop-Ups. For children too young or unable to attend these events, parents are encouraged to register for the Books from Birth program to receive a free book in the mail every month. Learn more about Books From Birth at https://www.pgcmls.info/freebooks.

To attend one of the Arts & Literacy Summer Pop-Ups, please RSVP by phone: 301-952-4436, or email: councildistrict2@co.pg.md.us.
