Council Member Wala Blegay, Esq. (District 6) will host The State of the Power, a virtual community discussion, on Monday, December 8, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. The event will focus on Maryland’s growing energy crisis, rising electricity bills, and the growing strain on the state’s power grid as large-scale developments, including data centers, expand across the region.
Statewide, residents are facing some of the highest energy costs in years, prompting questions about what is driving the increases and what can be done to ensure a reliable and affordable energy future. The forum will bring together leading experts to help explain the factors behind Maryland’s energy challenges and discuss potential solutions. Featured speakers include Jason M. Stanek, PJM Interconnection’s executive director for governmental services, and Brittany Baker, the Maryland director for the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN).
“Maryland is at a critical crossroads when it comes to energy,” said Council Member Blegay. “As our state continues to grow and attract large developments, such as data centers, we must ensure that our infrastructure keeps pace and that families are not left struggling with rising power bills. This conversation is about transparency, accountability, and finding real solutions that protect both residents and our long-term energy future.”
The event will be hosted virtually and is free and open to the public. Prior registration is required. Residents, members of the press, community leaders, and business owners are encouraged to attend and participate in this important conversation.
