Agenda Includes Budget, Education, and Legislative Priorities
The
Prince George’s County Council convened Day Two of its Annual Retreat today,
January 4, with discussions on the County’s fiscal outlook, education, and
legislative priorities for the upcoming 2018 Maryland General Assembly
session. The three-day meeting, which
concludes tomorrow, is being held in the Terrapin Room, at The Hotel at the
University of Maryland, in College Park.
Council
Members opened today’s session with a financial overview of Prince George’s
County provided by Office of Management and Budget Director Stanley Earley, and
Deputy Director Amber Hendricks. The
presentation and dialogue focused on the County’s economic outlook, long-term
fiscal outlook, along with the General Fund and Capital Improvement Program outlook
for Legislative Year 2018.
Focusing on Prince George’s County’s educational anchors and their impact of the local economy, the Council also heard from Prince George’s County Community College President, Dr. Charlene Dukes; Special Assistant to the University of Maryland President, Ken Ulman; Bowie State University Business School Dean, Dr. Anthony Nelson; and Prince George’s County Assistant DCAO for Economic Development, David Iannucci.
Council
Chair Glaros noted the importance of an ongoing dialogue between local
government and the leadership of Prince George’s County’s flagship colleges and
universities.
“We
are fortunate in Prince George’s County to have three first-class institutions
of higher learning that contribute to the growth and vitality of our workforce
and communities.”
Continuing
the conversation on education in the County, PGCPS Capital Programs Director
Shawn Matlock addressed overcrowding and school construction.
Council
Chair Glaros also welcomed County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III noting
priorities that will serve as a foundation for the future.
“Our
theme is ‘Start Strong, Finish Stronger’ and this will be the last year for
many of my colleagues on the County Council. We are seeing transition happening and we want to make sure that the key
priorities that have been undertaken both by your administration and this
Council continue to move forward this year and beyond.”
The
day concluded with a General Assembly Outlook and overview of Legislative
Priorities for 2018.
