[ARCHIVED] DISTRICT 2 PROPERTY TAX REASSESSMENT FORUM A SUCCESS

Prince George’s County Council Member Deni Taveras (D) – District 2, welcomed over 50 residents to the District 2 Property Tax Reassessment Information Forum held at the Rollingcrest-Chillum Community Center in Hyattsville on Wednesday, January 27, 2016.

The District 2 Property Tax Reassessment Information Forum featured a presentation on the Property Tax Assessment appeal process by Prince George’s County Supervisor of Assessments Daniel R. Puma. Forum participants learned about the appeal process for tax assessments as well as the application process for the Prince George’s County Homestead Tax Credit.

Council Member Taveras noted the importance of an informed citizenry.

“Many of our District 2 residents have experienced fluctuating assessments on their principal residence. Information about the appeal process, is important, especially for homeowners with excessive assessments. Onsite assistance for residents with large assessment increases proved very helpful”

The Homestead Property Tax Credit, established by state law, helps homeowners with large assessment increases on their principal residence. The Homestead Tax Credit limits the increase in taxable assessments each year to a fixed percentage. Every county and municipality in Maryland is required to limit tax assessment increases to 10% or less each year. Prince George’s County has a 2% cap which further limits increases.
