[ARCHIVED] Council Members Issue Statement on Court Ruling in Favor of Wrongfully Deported Beltsville Man

Members of the Prince George’s County Council applaud today’s federal court ruling ordering the Trump administration to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia home to Prince George’s County by Monday.

“We celebrate the court’s decision and stand in solidarity with Kilmar and his family. What happened to him is an absolute disgrace, and I pray for his safe return,” said Council Vice Chair Krystal Oriadha. “What the Trump administration is doing is not only deeply harmful—it’s a threat to our communities and our values. As the daughter of an immigrant, I know firsthand the fear and uncertainty that so many families are living with every day. Today’s victory is meaningful, but it is only one step forward. There are still countless families who need our advocacy, and we must continue to fight for justice and dignity for all."

Several Council Members attended today’s hearing and/or a CASA rally before the hearing,  including Vice Chair Oriadha, Council Member Tom Dernoga, who represents Beltsville, Council Member Jolene Ivey, and Council Member Eric Olson.

“What happened to Kilmar Abrego Garcia is more than a mistake—it’s cruelty. A loving father and husband was ripped from his family without cause, leaving them in crisis,” said Council Member Olson. “This is the result of unchecked power, arrogance, and disrespect for the rule of law. Kilmar must be brought home. His family deserves justice, and our communities deserve safety—not fear.”

“It is clear listening to the government’s case that it’s not even pretending that it has a case,” said Council Member Dernoga. “The Trump administration is arrogant and doesn’t care what the courts say or what devastating impact its actions have on families. Cruelty is the point.”
