[ARCHIVED] Council Members Blegay & Oriadha Celebrate African Culture at African Cultural Night Award Ceremony

This Friday, September 27, 2024, Council Members Wala Blegay (District 6) and Krystal Oriadha (District 7) will host the highly anticipated African Cultural Night Award Ceremony at the Hampton Conference Center beginning at 7:00 PM. This celebration will shine a spotlight on the vibrant African culture that continues to flourish within the county, while honoring the significant contributions of African community leaders.

The event will feature cultural performances, an African fashion show, and award presentations, in addition to distinguished speakers including Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman and Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy.

“Prince George’s County has witnessed tremendous growth in its African population,” said Council Member Blegay, who is a Liberian and Nigerian American. “African residents represent a remarkable percentage of the county’s business community, and they continue to shape the economic and cultural fabric of our county’s future. We are also blessed to have three daughters of African immigrants on the Prince George’s County Council.”

“As a proud Kenyan American, I understand the importance of elevating the stories of our community members," said Council Member Oriadha. "The American dream is built on the sacrifices made by our families to ensure a bright future for generations to come. It is an honor to celebrate the triumphant achievements of Prince George's County’s African community, and I am happy to have the opportunity to work with Council Member Blegay to acknowledge and recognize the fantastic changes we have seen in our community."

This event promises to be an evening of unity, celebration, and cultural pride, bringing together leaders, community members, and cultural ambassadors to highlight the significant contributions of African residents in Prince George’s County.
