Measure encourages people to go plant-based on March 20

The Prince George’s Council unanimously adopted resolution (CR-008-2024) proclaiming March 20th “MeatOut Day” in the county, urging citizens to abstain from eating meat and consider the diverse and delicious alternatives available.

Started in 1985, MeatOut empowers thousands of people from coast to coast to turn over a new leaf by exploring the many benefits of plant-based eating — for animals, our health, and the planet.

“We know vegetarian and vegan lifestyles aren’t for everyone,” said Council Chair Jolene Ivey. “This initiative is about encouraging people to eat less meat when possible and think about the health and environmental benefits of a more plant-based diet. Even eliminating meat just for one day can make a difference.”

“After a recent briefing by the Health Department, we know there are a lot of chronic illnesses in the county, and diet is very important in addressing that,” said District 1 Council Member Tom Dernoga. “MeatOut Day is meant to encourage people to try a plant-based diet, not that they need to go plant-based all day every day, but they should consider the health benefits.”

The Council is looking forward to a plant-based lunch for staff to commemorate MeatOut Day. Prince George’s County has a number of restaurants that serve plant-based meals, and some of them will be providing specials on March 20. For more information, click here.
