[ARCHIVED] Police Accountability Board to Provide Overview of 2023 Report to Council Committee

Board Recommendations Focus on Policy, Policing, Transparency, Tools, and Resources

The Prince George’s County Council’s Health, Human Services, and Public Safety Committee (HHSPS) will welcome the County’s Police Accountability Board (PAB) to its committee meeting on Thursday, February 15th for an overview of their 2023 Annual Report and policy recommendations. The briefing, beginning at 1:30 p.m., will be held at the Wayne K Curry Building, Committee Room 2027, 1301 McCormick Drive in Largo.

The 11-member PAB, established under Council Bill CB-021-2022, is charged with receiving complaints of police misconduct and referring them for investigation; reviewing the disciplinary outcomes of investigations conducted by law enforcement agencies; and identifying trends in the disciplinary processes of police officers in the County and providing policy recommendations.

Council Member Wanika Fisher (District 2), chair of HHSPS, says public safety is paramount for the Council, and updates from the Police Accountability Board ensure a comprehensive, collaborative approach to addressing the longstanding issue of police accountability.

“The PAB was established to increase transparency and address residents’ concerns related to incidents with the police,” says Fisher. “We look forward to hearing the board recommendations and expanding our efforts to increase public understanding of law enforcement policies and procedures.”

Under a legislative package of police reforms enacted in 2022 by the County Council, new state requirements for improved policing and the establishment of a PAB were implemented.  CB-021-2022, included in the package, implemented the Maryland Police Accountability Act of 2021 passed by the General Assembly, establishing a Police Accountability Board, an Administrative Charging Committee and Trial Boards for Prince George’s County and its municipalities.
