The Prince George’s County Council, currently in August Recess, will convene a virtual Special Session on Monday, August 29, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., to address Council Resolution-090-2022, establishing a public engagement process for the selection of members to serve on the Police Accountability Board, nominated by both the County Executive and County Council.

The Council will receive public comment on CR-090-2022 during a Committee of the Whole meeting also scheduled for Monday, August 29, 2022, at 11:15 a.m.  The resolution is eligible for Council adoption.  To register to speak or submit written comments by 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 28, 2022, please CLICK HERE.

Under a legislative package of police reforms enacted in July by the County Council and effective on August 29th, new state requirements for improved policing and the establishment of a Police Accountability Board were implemented.  CB-021-2022, included in the legislative package, requires a resolution setting forth the public engagement process for selecting members to the Police Accountability Board.

The Council will appoint five members to the eleven-member Police Accountability Board. Council Chair Calvin S. Hawkins, II, says community input is essential to this process and successfully improving law enforcement.

“Addressing the longstanding issue of police accountability is a serious matter, and our commitment to achieving meaningful reform will be evident in a measured, deliberate, and transparent process, resulting in the selection of fair-minded, objective appointees.”
