COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES LEGISLATION SUPPORTING “NATIONAL DAY OF EMPATHY” IN PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY
Resolution Expresses Council Support for National Day of Empathy and Initiatives Supporting Criminal Justice Reform
The Prince George’s County Council, during session on Thursday, March 2, unanimously supported CR-023-2021, legislation sponsored by Council Chair Calvin S. Hawkins, II, expressing Council support for the National Day of Empathy and initiatives supporting criminal justice reform.
The Day of Empathy is a day of action to generate widespread empathy for millions of Americans impacted by the criminal justice system. On this day, Americans impacted by the criminal justice system nationwide meet with lawmakers in their state to share their stories and experiences; educate; and broaden empathy among elected representatives and community members.
Council Chair Hawkins says CR-023-2021 brings awareness to the issue of criminal justice reform, while encouraging compassion.
“Those who have been impacted by the criminal justice system not only include formerly incarcerated persons, but their family members, loved ones, friends and members of the larger community. Empathy and compassion are critical because many of them will face difficult challenges as a formerly incarcerated person. Additionally, elected officials need a fuller understanding concerning the impact of policy decisions on their lives. CR-023-2021 is yet another tool in our toolbox to support ex-offenders and reduce recidivism rates in Prince George’s County.”
members of the Prince George’s County Re-Entry Advisory Board were present during Council adoption of CR-023-2021 and recognized for their work to support ex-offenders transitioning back into society. The Re-Entry Advisory Board is charged with implementing a comprehensive re-entry program and re-entry services in the County, to aid formerly incarcerated persons with acclimating back into society. The advisory board will evaluate and assess resources and services currently available, and identify ways to effectively implement programs addressing employment, housing, mental health and faith-based initiatives.
