PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTS RESOLUTION CONDEMNING THE ACTS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST THE U.S. CAPITOL AND ACTIONS OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
Historic Council Resolution Condemns Violence Against the U.S. Capitol and the Actions by the President to Incite Unrest and Undermine Democracy
The Prince George’s County Council adopted a formal condemnation of the “acts of violence against the U.S. Capitol and actions of the President of the United States,” through unanimous approval of Council-Resolution-004-2021, during session on Tuesday, January 12, 2021.
CR-004-2021 responds to the violent and deadly assault on the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, incited by actions of the U.S. President and his political allies, and the threat of future attacks nationwide, as the January 20th Presidential Inauguration draws near.
Under the legislation, the Council calls on the Cabinet, the United States Congress and/or Federal and local enforcement agencies to seek the condemnation and removal of the President of the United States by resignation or other constitutional means; censure or otherwise reprimanded members of Congress involved for unlawful conduct contrary to their oath of office; seek the apprehension, arrest and full prosecution of those responsible and involved in the violence and destruction of the United States Capitol; and appropriately plan and provide law enforcement response for the January 20, 2021 Inauguration of the 46th President of the United States.
Council Chair Calvin S. Hawkins, II, in a recent Council Statement in response to the January 6th attack, says acts that seek to destabilize democracy must meet strong rebuke at every level.
“Prince Georgians and all Americans must stand united against violence, and those who would seek to undermine our nation’s political process. America is a nation of laws and every person who took part in the violent attacks on our Nation’s Capital must be brought to justice. We will continue to pray for the soul of our nation.”
The primary proposer of the resolution, Council Member Todd M. Turner (D-District 4), noted the historic nature of the Council’s measure.
“The words and actions leading up to the violence that occurred on January 6th attacked our democratic institutions and principles, rules of law and tradition of peaceful transfer of power in the United States. This extraordinary and historic Council action is a necessary response to these unlawful acts of violence.”
A copy of the adopted Resolution will be forwarded to the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the Majority Leader of the United States Senate, and the entire Maryland Congressional delegation.
