Council Letter to Amazon
Says County is Ready for Partnership Opportunities
The Prince George’s County Council, during session on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, unanimously voted to authorize a letter welcoming Amazon HQ2 to the Washington Metropolitan Region. The Council letter also echoes County Executive Angela Alsobrooks’ sentiments in her February correspondence to Amazon, announcing the County’s readiness to partner with the multinational Ecommerce company.
Council Chair Todd M. Turner says the Council looks forward to Amazon’s future in the region and potential opportunities in Prince George’s County.
“We stand ready, along with the County Executive, our Economic Development Corporation and our private sector partners, to help Amazon explore opportunities in Prince George’s County now that the decision has been made to come to the Washington, D.C. region.”
Addressed to Worldwide Economic Development Director Holly Sullivan, the Council letter notes that Prince George’s County is “uniquely positioned to assist Amazon in the creation of the neighborhood it seeks in the Greater Washington region,” citing housing opportunities for employees and growth and development opportunities for ancillary businesses.
Specifically, the letter references the County’s strategic focus on Transit-Oriented Development, the County’s General Plan 2035, Zoning Ordinance Rewrite Process, Economic Development Incentive Fund, and the Comprehensive Housing Strategy, as seeds for growing ancillary and entrepreneurial enterprises that will emerge from Amazon HQ2 presence in the region, and as a resource to help address Amazon’s workforce housing needs.
The letter also shares a conclusion of the County’s Economic Development Policy “A Targeted Economic Development Strategic Plan for Prince George’s County,” that the County has a diverse, high-value economy, with numerous assets that would be attractive to Amazon – federal installations, institutions of higher learning, a well-developed transportation and mass transit network, a highly-educated workforce pipeline, and available land for development at highly-competitive real estate costs.
