COUNCIL VICE CHAIR WALA BLEGAY INTRODUCES LEGISLATION ADDRESSING PAY TRANSPARENCY OF COUNTY GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES

Proposed Measure Would Require Prince George's County Government to Develop, Publish, and Make Easily Accessible the Salaries of Public Employees

Prince George’s County Council Vice Chair Wala Blegay, Esq., (District 6), during Council session on Tuesday, March 14th, introduced Council Bill-038-2023legislation addressing pay transparency in County Government.

Under the measure, Prince George’s County Government would be required to develop, publish and make easily accessible on a web portal or digital system the salary information for all public employees. The bill would take effect 45 calendar days after it becomes law. The data would be available to the public without registration, licensing requirements, or restrictions on its use.

Keeping in line with the People’s Agenda set forth by the Council, the bill would promote an open and honest exchange with the public, county government employees, and external stakeholders regarding the compensation, classification, and pay of all government employees.

Council Vice Chair Blegay calls for more transparency in the Prince George’s County government.

“The Pay Transparency bill helps address some unfortunate inequities in compensation that many people of color, women, and other minority groups often face. This issue must be addressed, especially when salary information is inaccessible and hidden through government processes and layers. The Pay Transparency bill will also serve as a means of narrowing the gender pay gap while fostering a dynamic and positive working environment that builds trust with external and internal stakeholders.”

CB-038-2023 has been referred to the Government Operations and Fiscal Policy committee for legislative review.
