[ARCHIVED] COUNTY COUNCIL CELEBRATES JUNETEENTH COUNTY HOLIDAY

The Prince George’s County Council, recognizing the history and contributions of African Americans in Prince George’s County and across the nation, will join residents in celebration of Juneteenth on Sunday, June 19, 2022.  The official public holiday is Monday, June 20, 2022.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom or Emancipation Day, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States and marks the day Union Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas to issue the President’s Executive Order known as the Emancipation Proclamation. Council Bill-078-2022, unanimously adopted by the County Council on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, expresses continued support for the celebration of Juneteenth National Freedom Day, a regular holiday in Prince George’s County.

This year, Juneteenth will mark the beginning of Black Restaurant Week in Prince George’s County.  Offered as an opportunity to leverage the economic power of all communities, of all races and backgrounds, to support African American owned restaurants, Black Restaurant Week will begin on Sunday, June 19th, running until Saturday, June 25, 2022.
