What is the Gun Violence Study Workgroup?

CR-75-2023 is designed to conduct a thorough study of the fundamental reasons behind the recent surge in gun violence. It aims to unite law enforcement, community leaders, educators, and other influential figures to tackle and comprehend the root causes contributing to the rise in gun violence.


What is the legislative history behind the Gun Violence Study Workgroup?

The Workgroup to Study Gun Violence: Causes, Effects, and Solutions (CR-075-2023) was proposed by Council Member Oriadha and introduced by Council Members Krystal Oriadha, Tom Dernoga, Ingrid Watson, Wala Blegay, and Edward Burroughs on September 6, 2023, and adopted on October 3, 2023.  After its adoption, CR-011-2024 removed the requirement that all workgroup members be selected within 60 days.  This will allow the Council to adequately vet and appoint appropriate and available members ready to serve.


How does the Gun Violence Study Workgroup benefit Prince George’s County?

Prioritizing the prevention of firearm-related violence and understanding its ramifications on the well-being and safety of Prince George’s County residents is a top priority for the County Council. Conducting an in-depth analysis of its impact on Prince Georgians will equip the Council with the necessary insights and resources to legislate effectively.
