Council Chair Statements

Posted on: December 20, 2017

The Prince George’s County Council, committed to ending domestic violence and abuse in the County, finds recent media reports about conditions at the Family Crisis Center disturbing and unacceptable.  Currently the only facility serving as a safe house for domestic violence victims, this independent nonprofit has received consistent County funding support.

In a continuing offensive against the tragedy of domestic violence, the Council appropriated $500,000 in FY 2018 to support its Domestic Violence Grant Program – an additional funding resource for nonprofit programs serving the housing, counseling and advocacy needs of County residents who are victims of domestic violence.  The program also supports prevention activities through a coordinated and collaborative community response to domestic violence in Prince George’s County.

$108,630 of the FY 18 Domestic Violence Grant funding directly supports Family Crisis Center programs.  The Council also provided another $50,000 to the Family Crisis Center through FY 2018 Non-Departmental Grants.

We understand that the County has inspected the facility and that the Family Crisis Center is also conducting its own investigation into resident complaints. We anxiously await more details from the inspections and the results of this investigation before determining the best next steps to support the needs of the residents of the Family Crisis Center.
