Statement from Chair Jolene Ivey following bond hearing for Cooper Lane Elementary School teacher Mark Cobb, who’s facing charges of sexual abuse of a minor and possession of child pornography.
“I was sick to my stomach reading the charging documents in this case. Parents send their students to school with a lot of trust, and we must do everything in our power to ensure that trust isn’t broken.
As Council Chair, I’m committed to looking at ways to improve protocols and procedures for preventing and responding to child sex crimes. This is a top priority for the Council, and we will work collaboratively with state lawmakers to strengthen existing laws, close any loopholes that may exist, and implement new initiatives to protect our students.
I urge parents to talk with their children about what’s appropriate, and offer praise for the young victim in this case for having the courage to come forward. Investigators believe there are other victims in this case, and anyone with information should contact PGPD detectives at 301-772-4930.”
