On this date 16 years ago, almost 3,000 people lost their lives in unimaginable terrorist attacks on the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and in a rural field in Western Pennsylvania. The impact is forever etched in our lives and history.
Included among the September 11 victims were 24 Prince George’s County residents. They were residents of Forestville, Temple Hills, Springdale, Camp Springs, Upper Marlboro, University Park, Clinton, Fort Washington, Lanham, Capitol Heights, Landover, Oxon Hill, Forest Heights and New Carrollton. The contributions and memories of these Prince Georgians remain an integral part of our hearts and communities.
Hundreds of first responders were also among the fallen on September 11. They are remembered across the country and in Prince George’s County by 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs during which a firefighter climbs or walks the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center.
The Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department will host the 2017 National Capital Region 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb & 5K Walk on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center, National Harbor, MD.
The County Council pays special tribute to the leadership and courage of Prince George’s County Fire Chief Benjamin M. Barksdale, who was among the Incident Commanders for the Arlington Fire Department at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.
We also encourage you to visit the 9/11 Memorial Park, located near the entrance of the Bladensburg Waterfront and Peace Cross, which was dedicated in 2006 in honor of our loved ones and neighbors who died in that horrific attack.
The Prince George’s County Council remembers and honors the victims of 9/11. We will never forget.
