Council Member Ivey was elected to her first four-year term in November 2018, representing Council District 5, and was reelected to her second four-year term in November 2022. She was elected in a Special Election to the At-Large position on November 5, 2024, and sworn in to the At-Large position on December 5, 2024. She served as Chair of the County Council from December 2023 to March 2025.

Among Council Member Ivey's priorities on the County Council are children and their families, the fight for environmental justice, and ensuring the residents of Prince George's County receive speedy, effective, and courteous services from the County Government. 

Governor Wes Moore appointed her to the Maryland Zero Emission Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Council (ZEEVIC) in 2023. She served as Chair of the region’s Council of Governments' Climate, Energy, and Environment Policy Committee (CEECP) in 2024.

In 2024, Council Member Ivey was awarded the Planned Parenthood of Metro Washington, DC's (PPMW) Annual Impact Gala Ally Award acknowledging her time on the board and her efforts to diversify the board and the creation of the organization’s health center in Suitland, Maryland. In 2016, she was named one of the Daily Record's Top 100 Women of Maryland and the recipient of the Maryland State NAACP's Kweisi Mfume Excellence in Advocacy Award. She was honored to be a part of the Leadership Greater Washington Class of 2020.

She previously served in Annapolis as a Delegate representing District 47 in the Maryland House of Delegates from 2007 to 2015. Council Member Ivey was elected by her colleagues in Annapolis to serve as Chair of the Prince George's County House Delegation from 2012 to 2014. A former broadcast journalist with a master's degree in journalism from the University of Maryland, Council Member Ivey co-founded Mocha Moms, Inc., a support group for at-home mothers of color, which she helped grow into a national organization. 

She and her husband, U.S. Representative Glenn F. Ivey (MD-4), have five sons. Council Member Ivey is also stepmother to Glenn's daughter and celebrates being a grandmother to three lovely grandchildren.
