Council News Posted on February 19, 2025

In celebration of Black History Month, Council Member Wanika Fisher (District 2) is proud to partner with M-NCPPC Department of Parks and Recreation to host “The History and Rhythms Behind the Music of OKAN Band,” an exciting and educational workshop. This free, all-ages event will happen on Saturday, February 22, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the North Brentwood Community Center.

OKAN is an award-winning Canadian Afro-Cuban jazz group featuring renowned percussionist Magdelys Savigne and violinist Elizabeth Rodriguez who will share the cultural stories and inspirations behind their music. Through a dynamic combination of performance, instruction, and storytelling, attendees will gain insight into how Afro-Cuban culture—especially the spiritual influence of the Orishas—shapes the themes, rhythms, and lyrics of OKAN’s music. Elements of Afro-Latino and Afro-Caribbean music will also be explored. In addition to the musical workshop, the event will include crafting activities, exciting performances, and a provided lunch.

“I’m thrilled to partner with Parks and Recreation for this Black History Month celebration,” said Council Member Fisher. “This workshop is an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Latino music while fostering learning and creativity in our community.”
