Council Member Wanika Fisher’s Statement on BB Gun Incident

Council News Posted on May 29, 2024

In response to the incident involving young people playing with an alleged BB gun outside Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, District 2 Council Member Wanika Fisher issues the following statement:

“I am deeply concerned and saddened by the recent incident involving young people with a BB gun nearby Northwestern High School. The safety and well-being of our children are of utmost importance, and such actions are completely unacceptable.

This event underscores the urgent need for comprehensive safety measures and education on the dangers of weapons, even those that may seem harmless. We are fortunate that no one was injured in this incident.

However, it serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of irresponsible behavior. I urge all parents, educators, and community leaders to join in our efforts to ensure our communities remain safe havens for our children.

We will work closely with Hyattsville Police and Prince George’s County Public Schools to reinforce security protocols and provide resources to address and prevent such incidents in the future.

Our community must remain vigilant and proactive in fostering a safe and supportive environment for our youth. Together, we can prevent such incidents and promote a culture of responsibility and respect.”
