Board of Health Meets to Address County’s Physician Shortage

Council News Posted on October 03, 2025 | Last Updated on October 03, 2025

On Monday, October 6 at 11:30 AM, the Prince George’s County Council, sitting as the Board of Health, will meet to address an alarming shortage of primary care physicians (PCPs) in the county. Currently, a single primary care provider in the county serves, on average, 2,020 Prince Georgians, 71% higher than the Maryland average of 1,180 residents per PCP. A recent study found the county has a shortage of around 1,050 physicians.

During Monday’s meeting, at the Wayne K. Curry Administration Building in Largo, the Board of Health will hear from healthcare experts about accessibility of primary care and analysis on what can be done to attract more primary care providers to the county. The meeting livestream can be found HERE.

“Prince George’s County faces a serious shortage of primary care physicians, and it impacts every resident,” said Council Member Wala Blegay (District 6), the Chair of the Board of Health. “This meeting is intended to get to the root of the problem so we can attract more doctors and strengthen healthcare across our county. The health and wellbeing of our residents is paramount and the time to act on this critical issue is now.”
