On Tuesday, February 27th, the Prince George’s County Council will honor several community trailblazers at its Black History Month Celebration, including Mr. Alonzo Daniel Black, Jr., who was one of the first two African American officers to join the Prince George’s County Police Department in 1967. He went on to become the County’s first elected Black sheriff.
Council will also honor Mrs. Virginia Ali, the iconic D.C. restaurant owner who is opening a new location of Ben’s Chili Bowl in Prince George’s County, and Mrs. Mattie Lee Coleman, our 105-year-old centenarian.
The theme of this year’s celebration is Black Arts Excellence, and special guests include Grammy-nominated troupe Sweet Honey In The Rock, Visual/Sketch Artist Rodger James, and the newly formed Kettering Middle School Lady Cougar’s Step-Team.
The 2024 Black History Month program will be held from 2:00-3:30 p.m. at the Wayne K. Curry Administration Bldg., 1301 McCormick Drive, Largo, MD.
The event will be livestreamed on the Council’s video page.
