DISTRICT 7 COUNCIL MEMBER KRYSTAL ORIADHA TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE AS RENT STABILIZATION ACT OF 2023 NEARS FINAL COUNCIL VOTE
Legislation Makes Way for Permanent Rent Stabilization Law in Prince George’s County
Prince George’s County Council Member Krystal Oriadha (District 7) will hold a press conference at the Wayne K. Curry Administration Building (Tech Lounge) on Tuesday, February 28th at 9:30 a.m. to encourage support for CB-007-2023, Rent Stabilization Act of 2023. Council Member Oriadha will be joined by County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, Council Leadership, the Prince George’s County Housing Coalition, and community advocates to encourage final support and enactment of the measure before the final vote, which will take place during a scheduled Council session at 10:00 a.m., immediately following the press event.
Council Member Oriadha proposed CB-007-2023 to temporarily stop excessive rent increases and help residents stay in their homes. The measure temporarily amends the Landlord-Tenant Code to limit a landlords’ ability to increase rent above a certain amount. If adopted, a landlord cannot increase rent above 3% for any tenant and cannot issue a notice of rent increase over 3% during the twelve-month period of the Rent Stabilization Act. This Act excludes affordable housing units with federal, state, or local subsidies and dwelling units that received an occupancy permit in the last five years. A working group to study permanent rent control in Prince George’s County will also be established in tandem with the measure.
