Community Legal Services

Services are staffed by CLS employees and volunteer lawyers. They provide legal education, advice and free legal representation to self-represented litigants in Prince George’s County. We have several legal programs and brief advice clinics to address a wide range of legal needs:

CASA

Legal Services: Know Your Rights. CASA provides a variety of legal services for low-income immigrants in housing, employment and immigration matters. CASA provides its members free legal consults on these matters during weekly intake sessions. Assistance in defending the legal rights of our members is accomplished through mass education sessions, advocacy, individual representation and impact litigation.

In addition, CASA provides assistance in applying for a variety of immigration benefits before the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) including the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) where CASA has established itself as the number one non-profit provider in Maryland.

House of Ruth Maryland

Legal representation is one of the greatest unmet needs confronting victims of intimate partner violence throughout Maryland. House of Ruth Maryland’s Marjorie Cook Domestic Violence Legal Clinic helps more than 2,000 victims of domestic violence obtain protective orders, peace orders, divorce decrees, custody of their children and child support for free each year. We currently staff 17 attorneys plus paralegals and administrative staff throughout 6 offices in Maryland, including courthouse locations in Baltimore City, Hyattsville, Upper Marlboro, Silver Spring and Montgomery County. To keep pace with the demand, more than 100 pro bono attorneys throughout Maryland have been trained and given technical support to prepare them for providing legal representation to battered women across the state.
